The Great Migration: A Story of Kinship
Through thoughtful documentation and
digital archiving, we ensure that the
wisdom of our elders is never lost to
time.
In 1908, following the conflict between the Kingdom of Badung and the Dutch, a rare historical event took place: a territorial exchange between Gerana Village and Tegal Village (now known as Selat). The entire community of Tegal migrated to Gerana, while the people of Gerana moved to Tegal, bringing with them their belongings, livestock, and ancestral spirits. This migration created a bond of kinship between the two villages that remains deeply felt a century later.
The Ancestral Lineage
The foundation of Puri Selat was laid by the noble descendants of the Mengwi Kingdom, specifically the lineage of I Gusti Agung Nyoman Kaler (Bethara Mantuk di Rana Penarungan).
Our history is carried forward by the memory of our founding figures:
I Gusti Agung Made Raka
The first Perbekel (Village Head) of Selat, who led the community through its earliest transitions.
I Gusti Agung Made Rai
The founder of Puri Selat Dauh (c. 1912). A figure of immense spiritual devotion (Nangun Yasa) at Mount Mangu, he established the sacred Padma Rong Tiga after receiving a divine blessing from Ida Bhatara Pucak Mangu.
I Gusti Agung Alit Reta
A brave veteran who fought for Indonesian independence, embodying the spirit of Tindih (loyalty and devotion) to the people, passing away
in 1946.
I Gusti Agung Gede Subrata
A dedicated freedom fighter and veteran who continued the family’s legacy of service to the nation and the village.
A Sanctuary for Others
Puri Selat has long been a place of refuge and balance. During the physical revolution against colonial rule, the Puri served as a sanctuary for the family of Tjokorda Sukawati from the Puri Ubud, cementing our role as a bridge of solidarity between the noble houses of Bali to the nation and the village.
Continuity Through Generations
Today, the fourth generation continues to walk the path laid out by our ancestors. We do not merely inherit a building; we inherit a responsibility to maintain the harmony and spiritual purity of the lineage that began centuries ago in the Great Kingdom of Mengwi.
